Halil Demir, the founder of the Zakat Foundation of America (ZFA), has an extraordinary journey from poverty to empowerment. Born in a remote village in Southeastern Turkey, he overcame limited access to education and self-taught himself to read. Fueling his passion for knowledge, he has a Ph.D. in education, focusing on creating a tuition-free university. Mr. Demir holds a Master of Nonprofit Management from North Park University, a Master of Arts in History from Chicago State University, and a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Basel. Exploring his activist career, he founded the Zakat Foundation of America and how he empowers communities worldwide through education and humanitarian aid.

With more than 20 years of experience in management and fundraising, he is known for his strong leadership and communication skills and ability to achieve sustainability and growth in challenging conditions. Being a leader of the nonprofit world, he serves as the board member for the Rohingya Community Center (RCC), American Muslim Humanitarian Form; Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA); Khalil Center; Zakat Foundation Institute; The Council of Islamic Organization of Greater Chicago; and Arise Chicago.
